Neurofilament light chain
Active
Description
Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a neuronal cytoplasmic protein highly expressed in large myelinated axons. Its levels increase in CSF and blood proportionally to the degree of axonal damage in a variety of neurological disorders. The role of NfL as a biomarker has been largely reported in multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), ALS, atypical parkinsonian disorders (APD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). In one specific use, serum NfL levels are markedly elevated in atypical parkinsonisms compared to Parkinson disease. PMID: 30967444 Source: PubMed Health
