Description
Fibroblast growth factor 23, or FGF23, is primarily produced in bone and helps regulate phosphate and vitamin D metabolism by binding to receptors on renal tubular cells. Intact FGF23 is the bioactive form that is produced after removal of a signal peptide from the inactive FGF23 precursor, and consists of an N-terminal domain and a C-terminal domain. Intact FGF23 is cleaved into N-terminal and C-terminal fragments, which are no longer active. The production of FGF23 is regulated by a variety of factors, including calcium and phosphate levels, 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D, parathyroid hormone, and iron deficiency.
