Version 2.80

Description

Xylose is a monosaccharide sugar with five carbon atoms and an aldehyde functional group. Also known as wood sugar, xylose has only 40% the sweetness of sucrose. The embryo of many edible plants, corncobs, cottonseed hulls, pecan shells, and straw all contain a fair amount of xylose.[Pubchem: 135191] The oral dextrose tolerance is used to estimate carbohydrate malabsorption in patients with celiac disease and nontropical sprue. The dextrose tolerance test also helps to differentiate digestive from absorptive abnormalities in patients with steatorrhea. The fasting patient is given a specific amount of xylose. Over the next five hours, all urine is collected, pooled together and refrigerated. Venous blood is drawn at 30 minutes, one hour, one and-a- half hours, two hours, three hours, and four hours post xylose ingestion. The xylose levels in the blood and urine samples are measured. Higher levels of xylose in the blood and urine correlate to increased absorption.[nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM195702212560802] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
