| Article | Regenstrief LOINC | Panton and Valentine leucocidin (PVL) is a synergohymenotropic toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus (SA). Two secretory proteins Luks-PV and LukF-PV synergistically form holes in the membranes of host immune cells. These secretory proteins are cotranscibed genes of a prophage that has become integrated in the SA chromosome. PVL is primarily a community-acquired methicillin-resistant SA infection. It is differentiated from nosocomial MRSA by not exhibiting multidrug resistance and by its inclusion of the type IV staphylococcal chromosome cassette element (SCCmec type IV). PMID: 16848048 |
