Calcidiol+Calciferol
Active
Description
Calcidiol+Calciferol is used to assess patients' vitamin D status, evaluate hypo and hypercalcemia and to investigate the causes of osteomalacia and rickets. Also useful in monitoring vitamin D replacement therapy. Vitamin D is the principal regulator of calcium homeostasis. It is particularly important in skeletal development and bone mineralization. Vitamin D is a prohormone because it has no hormone activity itself, but is converted to a molecule which does. The active form of vitamin D is 1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D or 1,25(OH2)D (when D is used without a subscript it refers to either D2 or D3). The two forms of vitamin D used for nutritional supplementation are the secosterols ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Source: Regenstrief Institute
