Description

Concanavalin A (Con A) is a plant mitogen that encourages T-lymphocytes to divide when the mitogen encounters its surface receptors. T-lymphocyte proliferation assays with ConA stimulation is useful when patients are thought to have reduced cellular immune activity, have primary or secondary immunodeficiency diseases and in patients with humoral immunodeficiency diseases. Patient recovery from post-hematopoietic stem cell transplant or on immunosuppressive therapy post solid-organ transplantation can also be assessed by evaluating their T-cell recovery with lymphocyte proliferation testing. Abnormal results are not indicative of any specific disease and nor is the level of abnormality suggestive of the degree of immunodeficiency.
