Description

Tzanck smear is a stain (usually Wrights) of cells scraped from a fresh blister or ulcer and looking for Tzanck cells, giant cells with multiple nuclei molded together and cytoplasm showing inclusion bodies. The test is also called the Chickenpox skin test or herpes skin test. Tzanck cells are found in Herpes simplex, Varicella and herpes zoster, Pemphigus vulgaris, and cytomegalovirus.
