Version 2.77

Description

Thromboelastography (TEG) is a viscoelastic test of hemostasis. In TEG, whole blood is added to a cup in which a pin is suspended, the cup is rotated, and as the clot forms, the rotational force is transferred to the pin. The torsion of the pin is transformed into a graphic record of the physical shape of a clot during fibrin formation and lysis. TEG can provide information about the status of coagulation factors, platelet function and fibrinolysis in whole blood. TEG is primarily used for assessment of hemostasis after cardiopulmonary bypass, during liver transplant surgery, or hemorrhaging episodes. TEG parameters are also used as part of the guiding algorithms for plasma, platelet and cryoprecipitate transfusions. Copyright Copyright © 1995-2009 Source: Mayo Medical Laboratories
