glutathione.reduced
Active
Description
Glutathione is an important antioxidant whose intracellular concentration is an indicator of oxidative stress. Intracellular glutathione is either in the reduced sulfhydryl form (GSH) or the oxidized disulfide form (GSSG). Reactive oxygen species are neutralized by GSH with the concomitant formation of GSSG. GSH also takes part in other processes including signal transduction, gene expression and apoptosis. Oxidative stress from a variety of conditions, including chronic lung disease, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, neurodegenerative disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and diabetes, can lead to a decreased GSH/GSSG ratio in a variety of tissues.
