Description
The VDRL (Venereal disease research laboratory) test is a screening test for syphilis. It detects antibodies directed against the agent that causes syphilis, called Treponema pallidum. The test is usually performed on blood. The VDRL test can also be performed on spinal fluid if syphilis (neurosyphilis) may be present in an individual's brain. If the test is positive, the next step is to confirm the results with an FTA-ABS test, which is a more specific test for syphilis. The VDRL test's ability to detect syphilis depends on the stage of the disease. The ability of the test to detect syphilis nears 100% during the middle stages of the disease but it is less sensitive during the early and late stages. Some conditions may cause a false positive test, including: HIV,lyme disease,certain types of pneumonia, malaria, systemic lupus erythematosus. (NLM's MedlinePlus) Source: Regenstrief LOINC
