Description

A colostomy is a surgical procedure that connects the distal end of the large intestine to the abdominal wall via an opening (stoma) made in the abdominal wall. After this procedure, stool will collect into a bag attached to the abdomen through the stoma. A colostomy is performed for several reasons, including abdominal infection, severe inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction or cancer. A colostomy can be either temporary or permanent depending on the disease or injury. In most cases, it can be reversed. [MedlinePlus Encyclopedia:002942] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
