Fluid output.cerebral ventricle drain
Active
Description
Insertion of a cerebral ventricular drain (CVD, also called an external ventricle drain) is a livesaving procedure for removing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that has excessively accumulated in the brain due to a disruption in the equilibrium between its production and absorption back into the body. Insertion of a CVD helps reduce intracranial hypertension by diverting the CSF as well as intraventricular blood. It also allows clinicians to continually monitor the intracranial pressure so that drainage can occur as needed. It can also be used to collect CSF for testing or to administer medication.
