Description
Tube thoracostomy (TT) is commonly used for traumatic injuries which result in hemothorax and pneumothorax. Many non-traumatic conditions associated with pleural effusion are also treated with TT. In some geographic areas, it has been used in the management of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, Kaposi's sarcoma and pneumonia. A chest tube is inserted into the pleural space and may then be be attached to a suction device to remove excess fluid or air. For long term drainage, a tunneled pleural drainage catheter is inserted which can be use for both inpatients and outpatients.
