Description
Pericardial drainage (pericardiocentesis) is generally necessary for patients with an excess of fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion) in order to relieve pressure on the heart and avoid heart dysfunction. It can also be used as a diagnostic tool to understand the cause of the effusion. It can be performed as either a routine or emergency procedure.
