Description

Synovial fluid is a viscous, yellow-brown liquid found in small amounts in joints, gives shape to eyeballs and is found in connective tissue. In joints, high levels of hyaluronic acid (HA) in synovial fluid help maintain normal fluid viscosity and joint integrity. In osteoarthritis, the synovial fluid viscosity and elasticity are both decreased. Viscosupplementation via injection has been used and is still being researched to determine its effectiveness in osteoarthritis of the knee. Injections of two milligrams of viscosupplement containing hyaluronic acid by 20 gauge 1.5 inch needles weekly for three weeks may increase synovial fluid viscosity and reduce inflammation and pain for about three months.
