Over the past several months, the Regenstrief HDS technical team has been working on foundational infrastructure updates to improve how LOINC content is ingested, managed, and served through our FHIR API endpoints.
What has changed (and what has not)
- Seamless continuity: All API endpoints, request/response formats, and core functionalities remain largely unchanged. The improvements are designed to be transparent to existing API clients and applications—no updates or code changes are required on your end.
- Streamlined release pipeline: Behind the scenes, we have modernized the internal loading and indexing processes for new LOINC releases. This updated pipeline enables faster turnaround times, improved reliability, and better scalability as the LOINC terminology expands.
- Identifying previous resource versions: Prior to the recent updates, accessing prior versions of ValueSet and ConceptMap resources were performed by adding a version number suffix to the LOINC Code, e.g. “LL1162-8-2.81”. This is now handled by a named parameter to indicate version. Get more information.
Strategic collaboration with West Coast Informatics
These improvements have been realized through a key technical partnership with West Coast Informatics (WCI), using their TermHub™ managed FHIR terminology platform. TermHub handles content distribution and hosting, while Regenstrief ensures data quality. WCI’s expertise in terminology management, ontology engineering, and health data standards supports a robust architecture for evolving interoperability needs. We have engaged with WCI to leverage this expertise to facilitate conversations and provide technical guidance with the larger HL7 FHIR community for the LOINC Terminology Service.
Join us at the 2026 LOINC Conference for further discussion
We invite you to learn more about these foundational enhancements and what they mean for you:
- Event: 2026 LOINC Conference (In-Person in Cologne & Online)
- Session: “What LOINC is doing for you” (Plenary Session)
- When: Wednesday, October 7, 2026, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CEST
As part of this larger session, we will walk through architectural updates of the terminology service and share insights from our collaboration with WCI.
Documentation in Knowledge Base
The LOINC Terminology Service is documented within our Knowledge Base. If you have any technical questions prior to the conference, please reach out via the LOINC Community Forum.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement in making health data interoperable worldwide!
