Ceftazidime is a third generation cephalosporin that exhibits broad-spectrum treatment against Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic bacteria. It is especially effective against Enterobacteriaceae and is resistant to most beta-lactamases. PMID: 3884319 Avibactam is a synthetic non-beta-lactamase inhibitor that is used to treat class A serine carbapenemases including Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC). In 2011, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognized the gap in antimicrobials against carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) and made the development of such new antimicrobials among its highest priorities. Ceftazidime+Avibactam was approved by an expedited process in 2014 by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat complicated urinary infections caused by (CPE). When ceftazidime+avibactam and metronidazole are use together, they are approved to treat complicated intra-abdominal CPE infections.
