Baccharis spp. (species) is a group of plants with medicinal properties. The genus Baccharis includes more than 500 species in the Asteraceae family across South and Central America. Medicinal teas are prepared from aerial parts of this shrub. For example, the plant Baccharis trimera D.C., commonly known as "carqueja", contains flavonoids, diterpenes and triterpenes, and is often used to treat skin diseases, ulcers, anemia, diabetes, malaria, inflammatory reactions, and hepatic diseases.
