It is native to Europe but has been introduced on all continents with temperate zones, and many islands. Ryegrass has become a highly valued and productive cool-season forage, hay, lawn and erosion-control grass. It was the first meadow grass cultivated in Europe, and is considered the most important forage grass there.There is a need to differentiate between Rye grass (Lolium perenne) g5, Cultivated Rye (Secale cereale) g12, Rye the foodstuff (Secale cereale) f5, and Wild Rye grass (Elymus tricoides) g70.
Rye grass pollen is a very common inducer of asthma, allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis
