Proinsulin is a protein encoded by the INS gene and a precursor to insulin. Proinsulin is a single chain of amino acids that is cleaved into three peptides. The three peptides include the A chain, B chain, and C-peptide. When the A and B chains are joined by a disulfide bond they become the hormone insulin. Insulin binds to the insulin receptors (INSR) on cells in the body to stimulate the uptake of glucose. In addition to decreasing the level of glucose in the blood, insulin also increases the permeability of cells to amino and fatty acids, and accelerates glycolysis and glycogen synthesis in the liver.http://www.genecards.org/cgi-bin/carddisp.pl?gene=INS Source: Regenstrief LOINC
