LP15521-5 Cysteine
Cysteine is a naturally occurring, sulfur-containing (sulfhydryl) amino acid which has a thiol group and is found in most proteins, though only in small quantities. Cysteine is in the same class as methionine. When it is exposed to air, cysteine oxidizes to form cystine , which is a dimer of two cysteine molecules joined by a weak disulfide bond. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is derived from cysteine and is a popular dietary supplement that is metabolized into the antioxidant glutathione. Cysteine takes its name from cystine, named after the Greek kustis meaning bladder ˆ' cystine was first isolated from kidney stones. Because it is a sulfur-based amino acid, cysteine itself can act as an antioxidant in the body. Cysteine is an important source of sulfur in human metabolism, and although it is classified as a non-essential amino acid, cysteine may be essential for infants, the elderly, and individuals with metabolic disease or who suffer from malabsorption syndromes.

LP15730-2 Methionine
Methionine is an essential nonpolar amino acid, and a lipotropic. Methionine and cysteine are the only sulfur-containing proteinogenic amino acids. The methionine derivative S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) serves as a methyl donor. Methionine plays a role in cysteine, carnitine and taurine synthesis by the transsulfuration pathway, lecithin production, the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine and other phospholipids. Improper conversion of methionine can lead to atherosclerosis. Methionine, a chelating agent, is one of only two amino acids encoded by a single codon (AUG) in the standard genetic code (tryptophan, encoded by UGG, is the other). The codon AUG is also significant, in that it carries the Start message for a ribosome to begin protein translation from mRNA. As a consequence, methionine is incorporated into the N-terminal position of all proteins in eukaryotes and archaea during translation, although it is usually removed by post-translational modification.

Term Description

Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP18136-9 2-Methylcitrate
Elevated methylcitric acid levels are indicative of an underlying metabolic disorder such as methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and propionic acidemia (PA).
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
LP18136-9 2-Methylcitrate
2-Methylcitrate (methylcitric acid (MCA)) is measured as a second-tier assay when abnormal propionyl carnitine or methionine concentrations are identified in a primary newborn screen. Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and propionic acidemia (PA) are defects of propionate metabolism caused by deficiencies in methylmalonyl-CoA mutase and propionyl-CoA carboxylase, respectively. The clinical phenotype of both conditions includes vomiting, hypotonia, lethargy, apnea, hypothermia, and coma in the newborn period, and both MMA and PA are associated with elevated MCA and propionyl carnitine concentrations. MMA and PA can be distinguished based on methylmalonic acid concentration, which is elevated in MMA and normal in PA.

Methylmalonate (methylmalonic acid) is measured as a second-tier assay when abnormal propionyl carnitine or methionine concentrations are identified in a primary newborn screening. The clinical phenotype of both conditions includes vomiting, hypotonia, lethargy, apnea, hypothermia, and coma. The biochemical phenotype for MMA includes elevated methylmalonic acid, propionyl carnitine and methylcitric acid, while patients with PA have elevated propionyl carnitine and methylcitric acid with normal methylmalonic acid concentrations as the enzymatic defect is upstream of methylmalonic-CoA mutase.

13965-9 Homocysteine [Moles/volume] in Serum or Plasma
Part Descriptions
LP14977-0 Homocysteine
Homocysteine, an amino acid with the formula HSCH2CH2CH(NH2)CO2H, is a homologue of the amino acid cysteine, differing from it only by an additional methylene (-CH2-) group. It is biosynthesized from methionine by the removal of its terminal Cε methyl group. Homocysteine can be recycled into methionine or converted into cysteine with B-vitamins.
