Copper (symbol Cu, from Latin cuprum) is a heavy metal with an atomic number of 29 and atomic weight of 63.55. It is a ductile metal with excellent electrical conductivity. It was extensively used as an electrical conductor, building material, and component of various alloys. It is an essential nutrient to all higher plants and animals where it is found primarily as a cofactor in various enzymes, and in copper-based pigments. In high amounts, copper can be poisonous or even fatal.

Veterinary Medicine:
Copper sulphate is often added to pig feed to improve weight gain. If the feed is not uniformily mixed, pigs may be exposed to toxic levels of copper. The first indication of toxicity is a rise in blood copper concentration. The primary clinical signs include jaundice, dullness, weakness, anemia, trembling and respiratory distress.

Term Description
A free copper level is calculated based on the difference between total copper and ceruloplasmin measurements, where the ceruloplasmin level represents the bound portion of circulating copper. In patients with Wilson's disease that is pre-symptomatic or adequately controlled, the free copper level is within normal range, but in symptomatic patients, it is typically elevated. Increasing free copper levels in a patient with previously normal levels may indicate a change in compliance with therapy or a growth spurt or change in diet requiring therapy adjustment. PMID: 12662398 This term represents the calculated result for free copper level as a fraction of the total copper measurement.

The measurement of free (unbound) drug concentrations in plasma is important for certain drugs and has two advantages over measurement of total concentration: (1) the free concentration is independent of changes in plasma binding (e.g., due to changes in albumin), and (2) the free concentration is more directly related to both the efficacy and toxicity of the drug PMID: 6636249. For most drugs and the majority of patients, measuring the free and total concentrations is not necessary. However, for certain drugs, including some anticonvulsants and antibiotics, and specific patient populations, such as critically ill or immunosuppressed patients, the free concentration is a better indicator of therapeutic effect and potential toxicity.
