Anti-fibrillarin antibody (AFA), also known as anti-U3-RNP, is an antibody to a nucleolar ribonucleoprotein called fibrillarin, which marks the site of formation of the nucleolus in cells that are dividing. AFA is associated with systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) and is more prevalent in African American patients with scleroderma compared to other patient populations. In addition, patients with scleroderma who have AFA tend to be younger at disease onset and have a higher frequency of diffuse cutaneous involvement, pulmonary artery hypertension, musculoskeletal and cardiac involvement, and lower frequency of arthritis.
