Part Description
LP14287-4 Trypanosoma cruzi
The kinetoplastid protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi is the organism that causes Chagas disease. It was discovered in 1909 in Brazil by Carlos Chagas. T cruzi is transmitted to mammals, birds, and reptiles by many of the over 130 species of triatomine bugs. T cruzi can be found in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America. The highest density of vector diversity of T cruzi is in the western United States where woodrats are its most common reservoir. Other animals that harbor T cruzi include raccoons, skunks, and coyotes. Infection with T cruzi may be mild or asymptomatic, or rarely can be acute with severe inflammation of the heart muscle, the brain, and the lining around the brain. Approximately 8 million people are infected with T cruzi in Mexico, Central America, and South America, of whom 20-30% will develop symptoms and possibly life-threatening disease. T cruzi is visible on thin or thick blood smears during the acute phase of infection. There are also serological tests used to diagnose past or present infection with T cruzi.[https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/chagas/treatment.html] PMID: 21976603
