Clue cells are epithelial cells of the vagina and their distinctive stippled appearance is due to certain bacteria. They indicate bacterial vaginosis, particularly that caused by Gardnerella vaginalis, a group of Gram-negative bacteria. This bacterial infection gives a foul, fishy smelling yellow/grey frothy vaginal discharge. Often the vaginal pH is increased above 4.5.
