Proinsulin is a protein encoded by the INS gene and a precursor to insulin. Proinsulin is a single chain of amino acids that is cleaved into three peptides. The three peptides include the A chain, B chain, and C-peptide. When the A and B chains are joined by a disulfide bond they become the hormone insulin. Insulin binds to the insulin receptors (INSR) on cells in the body to stimulate the uptake of glucose.
