Regurgitation (also known as backflow) is a heart valve problem where, if a valve doesn't close tightly, blood leaks back into the chambers rather than flowing forward through the heart or into an artery. Regurgitation, especially that of the mitral valve, is often due to prolapse, which is when the leaflets of the valve flop or bulge back into the heart chamber during systole. The degree of regurgitation is associated with the extent of clinical symptoms.[NHLBI: hvd]
