Prolactin [Mass/volume] in Serum or Plasma by Immunoassay
Active
Part Description
LP14688-3 Prolactin
Prolactin is an anterior pituitary hormone encoded by the PRL gene, synthesized and secreted by lactotrope cells in the adenohypophysis. It is also produced in other tissues including the breast and the decidua. Pituitary prolactin secretion is regulated by neuroendocrine neurons in the hypothalamus, most importantly by neurosecretory dopamine neurons of the arcuate nucleus, which inhibit prolactin secretion. Prolactin levels may be checked as part of a sex hormone workup, as elevated prolactin secretion can suppress the secretion of FSH and GnRH, leading to hypogonadism, and sometimes causing erectile dysfunction in men. Prolactin measurement may also be of use in distinguishing epileptic seizures from psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, as serum prolactin level usually rises following an epileptic seizure.[Wikipedia: Prolactin]

- Change Reason
- The EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
