LP15346-7   Alkaline phosphatase
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP, ALKP) is a hydrolase enzyme responsible for removing phosphate groups from many types of molecules, including nucleotides, proteins, and alkaloids. ALP is present in all tissues throughout the entire body, but is particularly concentrated in liver, bile duct, kidney, bone, and the placenta. Humans and most other mammals contain the following ALP isozymes: ALPI (intestinal), ALPL (tissue non-specific, liver/bone/kidney), and ALPP (placental, aka Regan isozyme).

The normal range of alkaline phosphatase is 20 to 140 IU/L. High ALP levels are present in children and pregnant women, if bile ducts are blocked, and in the presence of osteoblast activity, such as with Paget's disease of the bone. Lowered levels of ALP are less common than elevated levels and occurs in various conditions, including aplastic and pernicious anemias, chronic myelogenous leukemia, Wilson's disease, children with severe enteritis, and postmenopausal women on estrogen therapy for osteoporosis. LP7238-1   Body fld
The LOINC "Body fld" System represents body fluids other than serum, plasma, blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. When a LOINC term with the System "Body fld" is used, the specific specimen source or body fluid type should be reported elsewhere with the result. Where more specific terms for pleural, peritoneal, synovial fluid, etc. exist, we encourage you to use the more specific terms. In contrast to "Body fld", the System "Asp" in LOINC represents the fluid withdrawn during an aspiration procedure from an abnormal collection of fluid, such as from an abscess or cyst. "Asp" is used for abnormal fluid collections that are aspirated, while "Body fld" is used for named body fluids, such as synovial fluid or peritoneal fluid, that are not inherently pathologic. Change Reason
Changed answer list from "Normative" to "Example" to fit the current LOINC model.; The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
