Hemoglobin F is used to screen for fetal-to-maternal hemorrrhage. The presence of fetal red cells in the maternal circulation may be identified by use of the acid elution principle first described by Kleihauer, Brown, and Betke, or by several modifications. Very small volumes of red cells commonly escape from the fetal intravascular compartment across the placental barrier into the maternal intervillous space. Source: Regenstrief Institute
