6-Mercaptopurine (6-MP) is used in treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. The effects of 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) are mediated via its intracellular conversion (RBC) to 6-thioguanine (6-TG) and 6-methylmercaptopurine (6-MMP) nucleotide metabolites, the latter genetically controlled by thipurine methyltransferase (TPMT). This assay measures level of 6-MMP which has been shown to correlate with therapeutic response and potential toxicities. Source: Regenstrief Institute

Mercaptopurine (also called 6-mercaptopurine, 6-MP or its brand name Purinethol) is an immunosuppressive drug.

It is used to treat leukemia, pediatric non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, polycythemia vera,psoriatic arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
