LP15624-7 Glycosaminoglycans
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) or mucopolysaccharides are long unbranched polysaccharides consisting of a repeating disaccharide unit. This unit consists of an N-acetyl-hexosamine and a hexose or hexuronic acid, either or both of which may be sulfated. Members of the glycosaminoglycan family vary in the type of hexosamine, hexose or hexuronic acid unit they contain (e.g. glucuronic acid, iduronic acid, galactose, galactosamine, glucosamine). They also vary in the geometry of the glycosidic linkage. This family of carbohydrates is essential or important for the life of vertebrates and an assortment of lower animals. GAGs form an important component of connective tissues. GAG chains may be covalently linked to a protein to form proteoglycans.

LP15624-7 Glycosaminoglycans
Heteropolysaccharides which contain an N-acetylated hexosamine in a characteristic repeating disaccharide unit. The repeating structure of each disaccharide involves alternate 1,4- and 1,3-linkages consisting of either N-acetylglucosamine or N-acetylgalactosamine.

LP15624-7 Glycosaminoglycans
The presence of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in urine is indicative of a mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) disease or sometimes bone, connective tissue, thyroid, or urinary disease or an oligosaccharidoses. The MPSs are characterized by any enzyme deficiency inolved in the degradation of a GAG molecule such as heparan sulfate, keratan sulfate, or chondroitin sulfate. GAGs then accumuilate in lysozomes causing disease which can present variably and involve multiple systems.

LP32035-5 Creatinine
Creatinine or creatine anhydride, is a breakdown product of creatine phosphate in muscle. The loss of water molecule from creatine results in the formation of creatinine. It is transferred to the kidneys by blood plasma, whereupon it is eliminated by glomular filtration and partial tubular excretion. Creatinine is usually produced at a fairly constant rate and measuring its serum level is a simple test. A rise in blood creatinine levels is observed only with marked damage to functioning nephrons; therefore this test is not suitable for detecting early kidney disease. Creatine and creatinine are metabolized in the kidneys, muscle, liver and pancreas.
