BPI is a human protein that does show bactericidal activity against gram-negative bacteria, but the measurement of antibody against this protein is related to the fact that it is a target of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies(ANCA). These (BPI-ANCA) antibodies have been found in a number of inflammatory disorders (particularly as a marker for inflammatory bowel disease) and also in autoimmune diseases such as SLE and RA.
