Part Descriptions
LP14877-2 Myelin
Myelin is a modified plasma membrane that is wrapped in a spiral around the nerve axon creating a sheath.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK27954/ The myelin sheath is comprised of abundant amounts of lipids and proteins and functions to insulate and protect the axon, and speed up nerve signal transmission. Myelin covers the axons in both the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The myelin in CNS is produced by the oligodendrocytes and the myelin in the PNS is produced by the Schwann cells. In multiple sclerosis, a disease where myelin is lost or damaged, only the CNS myelin is affected. The two types are myelin are chemically distinct but accomplish the same goal to promote efficient signal transmission and protect the axon. In multiple sclerosis, the immune system attacks the myelin sheath in the CNS, damaging it and the oligodendrocytes that produce it. The resulting lesions and scars are detectable on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), causing nerve impulses to slow down or stop completely, and leading to the symptoms of MS.https://www.nationalmssociety.org/What-is-MS/Definition-of-MS/Myelin

LP7238-1 Body fld
The LOINC "Body fld" System represents body fluids other than serum, plasma, blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. When a LOINC term with the System "Body fld" is used, the specific specimen source or body fluid type should be reported elsewhere with the result. Where more specific terms for pleural, peritoneal, synovial fluid, etc. exist, we encourage you to use the more specific terms. In contrast to "Body fld", the System "Asp" in LOINC represents the fluid withdrawn during an aspiration procedure from an abnormal collection of fluid, such as from an abscess or cyst. "Asp" is used for abnormal fluid collections that are aspirated, while "Body fld" is used for named body fluids, such as synovial fluid or peritoneal fluid, that are not inherently pathologic.
