This term was created for (but not limited to) a Streptococcus species multiplex Taqman® real-time PCR assay, which identifies Streptococcus species within Lancefield group C and G. The multiplex assay detects genes that encode for the penicillin binding protein genes (pbp2b) of Streptococcus anginosus, S. constellatus, and S. intermedius; the intermedialysin (ily) gene of S. intermedius; the chaperonin (cpn60) gene of S. dysgalactiae subsp equisimilus; and the 16S-23S intergenic spacer region (16S-23S ITS) of S. constellatus. Real-time PCR method is more rapid and cost-effective compared to identification of these organisms by 16S sequencing.

DNA homology studies and 16S rRNA sequence analysis demonstrate S. angiosus is collectively known as the Streptococcus anginosus (or milleri) group along with Streptococcus intermedius and Streptococcus constellatus. Streptococcus anginosus is part of the human bacteria flora, but can cause diseases including brain and liver abscesses under certain circumstances.
