Of more than 100 types of human papilloma virus, 14 that are considered high-risk for causing cervical cancer are 16,18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66 and 68. HPV 16 and 18 are often reported distinctly, while this test reports the presence of the remaining 12 as a single ordinal.

Oncogenic (high risk) human papillomavirus types behave as carcinogens in the development of cervicalcancer and other anogenital cancers. High risk types (which include types16,18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 68, 69, 73, 82) can cause low-grade cervical cell abnormalities, high-grade cervical cell abnormalities that are predecessors to cancer, and anogenital cancers. High-risk HPV types are identified in 99% of cervical cancers.
