Term Description

Medical treatment or invasive/manipulative procedure performed during this pregnancy to treat the pregnancy or to manage labor and/or delivery, including cervical cerclage, tocolysis, or external cephalic version. Cervical cerclage refers to circumferential banding or suture of the cervix to prevent or treat passive dilation and includes MacDonald's suture, Shirodkar procedure, and abdominal cerclage via laparotomy. Tocolysis refers to administration of any agent with the intent to inhibit preterm uterine contractions to extend the length of the pregnancy. Medications include magnesium sulfate (for preterm labor), Terbutaline, and Indocin (for preterm labor). External cephalic version refers to attempted conversion of a fetus from a nonvertex to a vertex presentation by external manipulation. Whether external cephalic version is successful or not (failed) is reported using a separate code [LOINC: 73820-3].
