Creatinine or creatine anhydride, is a breakdown product of creatine phosphate in muscle. The loss of water molecule from creatine results in the formation of creatinine. It is transferred to the kidneys by blood plasma, whereupon it is eliminated by glomular filtration and partial tubular excretion. Creatinine is usually produced at a fairly constant rate and measuring its serum level is a simple test. A rise in blood creatinine levels is observed only with marked damage to functioning nephrons; therefore this test is not suitable for detecting early kidney disease. Creatine and creatinine are metabolized in the kidneys, muscle, liver and pancreas. Norepinephrine (INN) or noradrenaline (BAN) is a catecholamine and a phenethylamine with chemical formula C 8 H 11 N O 3. The natural stereoisomer is L-(ˆ')-(R)-norepinephrine. It is released from the medulla of the adrenal glands as a hormone into the blood, but it is also a neurotransmitter in the nervous system where it is released from noradrenergic neurons during synaptic transmission. As a stress hormone , it affects parts of the human brain where attention and impulsivity are controlled. Along with epinephrine, this compound affects the fight-or-flight response, activating the sympathetic nervous system to directly increase heart rate, release energy from fat, and increase muscle readiness. Norepinephrine is released when a host of physiological changes activated by a stressful event, unleashed in part by activation of an area of the brain stem called the locus ceruleus. Dopamine, a chemical naturally produced in the body, functions in the brain as a neurotransmitter, activating dopamine receptors. It is also a neurohormone released by the hypothalamus. As a hormone, it inhibits the release of prolactin from the anterior lobe of the pituitary. Dopamine can also be supplied as a medication to target the sympathetic nervous system, leading to increased heart rate and blood pressure. Because dopamine cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, however, when given as a drug it does not directly affect the central nervous system. To increase the amount of dopamine in the brains of patients with diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Dopa-Responsive Dystonia, a synthetic precursor to dopamine such as L-DOPA can be given, since this will cross the blood-brain barrier.
