74132-2Aromatic solvents [Presence] in BloodActive

Term Description

Testing for aromatic (hydrocarbon) solvents comprised wholly or primarily of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds is performed to determine occupational or environmental exposure to toxins. The submitted lab tests for 2-Methylpentane, 3-Methylpentane, Benzene, Ethyl Acetate, Ethyl Ether, Ethylbenzene, Isobutyl Alcohol, o,m,p-Xylenes, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, Methyl n-Butyl Ketone, Methyl tert-Butyl Ether, n-Heptane, n-Hexane, n-Propanol, Pentane, Styrene, and Toluene. The submitter's test also included testing for Volatiles (Ethanol, methanol, isopropanol and Acetone) in whole blood [LOINC: 74133-0].

Part Description

LP18895-0   Aromatic solvents
Aromatic (hydrocarbon) solvents comprised wholly or primarily of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds. They are used commercially in numerous applications, including industrial solvents and chemical intermediates. Aromatic solvents can also be found in glues, paints, and paint thinners. Testing is performed to monitor occupational exposure to these solvents, including benzene, ethylbenzene, pentane, styrene, toluene, and xylenes. Toxicity from aromatic solvents causes CNS depressant effects (eg, irritation, nausea, dizziness, unconsciousness, etc). Severity depends on the intensity and duration of the exposure. In addition, benzene is listed as a potential carcinogen. Source: Regenstrief LOINC

Change Reason
The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
