Dimethylarginines are endogenous analogues of L-arginine. N,N-dimethylarginine (also known as asymmetrical dimethylarginine or ADMA) and N,N'-dimethylarginine (symmetrical dimethylarginine or SDMA) both inhibit cellular L-arginine uptake, and ADMA also competitively inhibits nitric oxide (NO) synthases. ADMA is predominantly degraded by the enzyme dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase, while SDMA is primarily excreted by the kidney. PMID: 25245031 ADMA and NO play a pivotal role in endothelial dysfunction, and elevated ADMA levels may be associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. SDMA has not been associated with cardiovascular disease but correlates with both measured and estimated glomerular filtration rate and is a marker of renal function.
