Vancomycin resistance vanD gene [Presence] by Molecular method
Active
Term Description
This test detects the presence of the vancomycin resistance gene vanD, and can be run on a bacterial isolate or a primary specimen (such as blood or urine) that is presumed to contain infectious microorganisms. This term was created for the New York State Department of Health and is limited for use by public health laboratories, which are unique in that they can sometimes run tests on any sample, either human or environmental, using locally-developed tests. Other organizations, such as hospitals or commercial laboratories, use a term that specifies the particular specimen(s) that the test kit they are using has been approved for.

Part Description
LP186088-3 Bacterial vancomycin resistance vanD gene
This test is used for the detection of vancomycin resistance genes by multiplex PCR. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat various infections, primarily those caused by gram-positive bacteria. Vancomycin resistance genes were first found in enterococci, and more recently have been found in Staphylococcus aureus. The emergence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) in hospitalized patients has lead to a restricted use of vancomycin. To date, multiple vancomycin resistance genes have been characterized, including: vanA, vanB, vanC (vanC-1, vanC-2, vanC-3), and VanD. Of the six van types, vanA and vanB are the most resistant to vancomycin, and are the two types that cause VRSA. PMID: 24983424

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; Removed parentheses from Component because the contents represent a gene name, not an acronym.; Updated System from "XXX" and Method from "Probe.amp.tar" according to the new, more sustainable model for LOINC molecular resistance terms [Approved by LOINC Laboratory Committee in June 2018].
