The Canadian Triage and Acuity Score (CTAS) is a 5-level scale designed to support triage nurses prioritize ED patients based on acuity and time sensitive conditions. It is built on a 17 group, 166 standardized complaints, each of which draws on a list of first order (vital sign, pain score, mechanism of injury, and bleeding risk) modifiers and complaint specific special modifiers to assign the most appropriate acuity score and to then stream patients to the right care area. For patient safety and quality of care it is recommended for CTAS level 1 to be seen immediately, CTAS 2 within 15 minutes, CTAS 3 within 30 minutes, CTAS 4 within 1 hour and CTAS 5 within 2 hours.
