76135-3 Inositol Free/Creatinine [Molar ratio] in 5 hour Urine --post XXX g sugar solution PO
Term Description
Measurement of inositol.free (myoinositol) per creatinine levels in urine collected for 5 hours after oral ingestion of a sugar solution (e.g. mannitol and lactulose). This test is used as a diagnostic aid for a variety of gastrointestinal diseases and evaluation of therapeutic interventions in both children and adults. PMID: 7714684

Part Descriptions
LP29074-9 Inositol.free
Inositol (formula C6H12O6 or (-CHOH-)6), or hexahydroxycyclohexane, is a sixfold alcohol (polyol) of cyclohexane. It exists in nine possible stereoisomers, of which the most prominent is free inositol, or myo-Inositol. Myo-inositol is incorporated into phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates, playing an important role as the structural basis for a number of secondary messengers in eukaryotic cells. Inositol supplements have been tested as a pharmacological intervention for a variety of conditions including bulimia, depression, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Increased levels of myo-inositol in urine have been reported in diabetics (both insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent). Quantification of myo-inositol is possible by various methods, including enzymatic assays, magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

LP32035-5 Creatinine
Creatinine or creatine anhydride, is a breakdown product of creatine phosphate in muscle. The loss of water molecule from creatine results in the formation of creatinine. It is transferred to the kidneys by blood plasma, whereupon it is eliminated by glomular filtration and partial tubular excretion. Creatinine is usually produced at a fairly constant rate and measuring its serum level is a simple test. A rise in blood creatinine levels is observed only with marked damage to functioning nephrons; therefore this test is not suitable for detecting early kidney disease. Creatine and creatinine are metabolized in the kidneys, muscle, liver and pancreas.

LP173648-9 Lactulose
Lactulose is a synthetic, non-digestible sugar used in the treatment of chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy, a complication of liver disease. It is a disaccharide (double-sugar) formed from one molecule each of the simple sugars (monosaccharides) fructose and galactose. It is produced commercially by isomerization of lactose and is broadly classified as an osmotic laxative. In sensitive individuals, such as the elderly or people with reduced kidney function, excess lactulose dosage can result in dehydration and electrolytic disturbances such as high sodium levels.

LP15873-0 Sucrose
Sucrose is broken down into its constituent monosaccharides, glucose and fructose, which are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. Sucrose provides a quick source of energy, followed by a rapid rise in blood glucose upon ingestion. Overconsumption has been linked with adverse health effects, including tooth decay, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and gout. Increased levels of sucrose in urine may be caused by disturbances of intensinal absorbtion, such as in celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, and gastroenteritis.

LP15722-9 Mannitol
A diuretic and renal diagnostic aid related to sorbitol. It has little significant energy value as it is largely eliminated from the body before any metabolism can take place. It can be used to treat oliguria associated with kidney failure or other manifestations of inadequate renal function and has been used for determination of glomerular filtration rate. Mannitol is also commonly used as a research tool in cell biological studies, usually to control osmolarity.
