Bacillus cereus [Presence] in Specimen by Organism specific culture
Active
Term Description
This term was created for the Georgia Department of Public Health, and we recommend limiting its use to the public health domain. Public health laboratories are unique in that they may have locally-developed tests that can be run on nearly any type of sample, and they use terms with a system of "XXX" together with the appropriate HL7 specimen field to specify the actual sample. Other organizations that do not use locally-developed tests, such as hospitals or commercial laboratories, use terms where the system is specific to the particular specimen(s) that the test kit has been approved for.

Part Descriptions
LP19584-9 Bacillus cereus
Bacillus cereus (B cereus) is a rod-shaped, endospore-forming aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria and is associated with two types of food poisoning: rapid onset with nausea and vomiting, and slower onset, primarily diarrheal illness. B cereus is also a less common cause of bacteremia/septicemia, endocarditis, meningitis, and infections of wounds, the ears, eyes, respiratory tract, and urinary tract. Treatment is with non-beta-lactam antibiotics. B cereus spores are resistant to heat, cold, radiation, desiccation, and disinfectants. Control is by good hygiene and adequate cooking and refrigeration of food. [NCBI Books: NBK7699]
