Clostridium perfringens [Presence] in Specimen by Organism specific culture
Active
Term Description
This term was created for the Georgia Department of Public Health, and we recommend limiting its use to the public health domain. Public health laboratories are unique in that they may have locally-developed tests that can be run on nearly any type of sample, and they use terms with a system of "XXX" together with the appropriate HL7 specimen field to specify the actual sample. Other organizations that do not use locally-developed tests, such as hospitals or commercial laboratories, use terms where the system is specific to the particular specimen(s) that the test kit has been approved for.

Part Descriptions
LP19598-9 Clostridium perfringens
Clostridium perfringens is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacteria that is a major cause of food poisoning in the United States. The disease results from the ingestion food contaminated with enterotoxin-producing C perfringens, usually C perfringens type A. Incubation time is 8-22 hours after ingestion of contaminated food, and symptoms include diarrhea, cramps, and abdominal pain. Fever, nausea, and vomiting are rare, and the disease lasts about 24 hours. C perfringens has also been sporadically reported in association with necrotizing enteritis. [NCBI Books: NBK8219]
