Part Description
LP190644-7 Thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor
TAFI (Thrombin Activatable Fibrinolysis Inhibitor) is a glycoprotein of a molecular weight of approximately 60,000 daltons and it belongs to the metalloprotease family, synthesized in the liver, and circulates in blood as a proenzyme without biological activity. TAFI is also called procarboxypeptidase U (CPU), procarboxypeptidase R (CPR), and plasma procarboxypeptidase B (CPB), and provides an essential link between fibrinolysis and coagulation cascade. Activated TAFI protects the fibrin clot against lysis. Defects in thrombin generation directly impact the protection of clots against lysis, thus defects in activation of TAFI may add to the severity of bleeding disorders. On the other hand, an increased activation of TAFI due to an increased rate of thrombin generation, may lead to thrombotic disorders. TAFI may also have an important function in the regulation of inflammation, wound healing and blood pressure. PMID: 15015228 PMID: 17008302 Elevated TAFI levels may form a mild risk factor for venous thrombosis. PMID: 10779431
