The amount of factor VIII (FVIII) and Von Willebrand factor.ristocetin cofactor (vWF:RCo) complex given based on FVIII dosing for patients with hemophilia A. For dosing based on vWF for patients with Von Willebrand disease (VWD), see LOINC 77725-0. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, Humate-P. According to the package insert provided by the submitter, Humate-P is an antihemophilic factor/von Willebrand factor complex approved to treat and prevent bleeding in adult patients with hemophilia A and also to treat spontaneous or trauma-induced bleeding episodes as well as prevent excessive bleeding during and after surgery in adults and children with von Willebrand disease (VWD).

Von Willebrand factor (vWF) is a high-molecular-weight plasma protein produced by endothelial cells and megakaryocytes. It is part of the factor VIII/vWF complex. The vWF has receptors for collagen, platelets, and ristocetin. Ristocetin is an antibiotic, previously used to treat staphylococcal infections, now mainly used in vitro to diagnose conditions such as von Willebrand disease. Platelet agglutination caused by ristocetin can occur only in the presence of von Willebrand factor multimers, so if ristocetin is added to blood lacking the factor it will not coagulate. The vWF facilitates the adhesion of platelets to collagen and hemostatic plug formation. The prolonged bleeding time in von Willebrand's disease is due to the deficiency of this factor.
