Percent serotonin release is calculated using total serotonin in platelets and serotonin released in the presence of patient serum, low dose unfractionated heparin (0.2 IU/mL) and donor platelets.

The serotonin release assay (SRA) is a functional test for the detection of heparin-dependent antibodies in heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). Patient's serum is added to donor platelets along with varying concentrations of heparin.
