Assay for the quantitative in vitro determination of platelet function triggered by a high concentration of ristocetin. In the presence of ristocetin, platelets bind to von Willebrand Factor (VWF) by means of glycoprotein Ib (GPIb) receptors and triggers platelet activation and aggregation. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Cobas RISTOtest, a quantitative in vitro assay using a high concentration of ristocetin (0.77 mg/mL) to stimulate strong platelet aggregation in whole blood samples by impedance aggregometry.

Platelet aggregation evaluates the functional integrity of platelets. Test agents for stimulation include ADP, collagen, epinephrine, ristocetin, thrombin and arachidonic acid. Different abnormalities are detected by evaluating the response to these stimulators. Studies are usually performed after screening tests (platelet count, PT, PTT, vWD workup) for bleeding disorders are found normal. Source: Regenstrief Institute
