This assay detects the presence of HIV 1 RNA and HIV 1 proviral DNA but does not distinguish between the two. If either the RNA or proviral DNA is detected, the reported result is "Detected." This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the Abbott Realtime HIV-1 Qualitative assay.

The quantitative determination of proviral HIV-1 DNA load is determined for antiretroviral treatment, particularly when HIV-1 RNA levels drop below the detectable limits during treatment.[PMID:11283046] HIV-1 proviral DNA is also a diagnostic marker for HIV-1 infections in newborns of HIV-1 seropositive women. [PMID:16973410]
